Missing American schooner 'probably had a catastrophic event'; 7 remain missing

A family sailing around the world and three others are feared to be lost at sea after their boat went missing three weeks ago after communicating with a meteorologist about an incoming storm. Search-and-rescue teams continue to look for signs of the historic schooner along the coast of New Zealand. NBC's Sara James reports.

By Henry Austin and Miriam Firestone

The "biggest ever" search of the seas surrounding New Zealand turned up no sign of an American schooner that has been missing for more than three weeks, officials said Friday. ?

Search and Rescue officer Neville Blakemore said the 70-foot vessel ?probably had a catastrophic event? while traveling from New Zealand to Newcastle, Australia.

?The areas that have been searched have been absolutely massive and the area searched is the biggest area the Rescue Coordination Center of New Zealand has ever undertaken,? Blakemore said. ?The comprehensive search by the Orion [aircraft] the last couple of days has indicated that if the yacht was still afloat they would have seen it in the search area. So we are assuming that it's not in the search area and thus probably had a catastrophic event.?

David Dyche, skipper of the 70-foot vessel Nina.

Blakemore added that he was refusing to give up hope of finding survivors but said the search was now focusing on debris from wreckage.?

The New Zealand Herald identified four of the people on the vessel as David Dyche, 58; his wife, Rosemary, 60; their son David, 17; and Evi Nemreth, 73, of Boulder, Colo., a maritime technology expert and retired University of Colorado professor. A 35-year-old British man, a 28-year-old American man and an 18-year-old American woman were also on board.

A storm was reported near the vessel's last known location on June 4, the day the Nina vanished. It featured winds gusting up to 70 mph and 26-foot waves.

New Zealand-based meteorologist Bob McDavitt told the Associated Press?that one of the crew was concerned about the conditions when she called on a satellite phone on June 4. ? ?

"The weather's turned nasty, how do we get away from it," McDavitt quoted Nemreth as asking him. ?

He added: "She was quite controlled in her voice, it sounded like everything was under control."

The Nina is seen at sea in January 2012.

Friends in Panama City, Fla., where the Nina often moored, ?told NBC station?WJHG that David Dyche was an ?accomplished captain? and said they were refusing to give up hope.

"You always worry anytime you've got a vessel in a bad weather situation,?Massalina Bayou marina director Bill Lloyd told WJHG on Thursday. ?But you don't handle a boat the size of Nina unless you're an accomplished captain.?

Blakemore, the rescue official, refused to rule out the possibility of survivors. However, he said that the ?logical conclusion? is that the boat sank rapidly, preventing the seven strong crew from sending out an SOS.

Unlike many locator beacons, he said that the one aboard Nina was not activated by water pressure and wouldn?t start automatically if the boat sank. However, he maintained that it would be unlikely that a craft the size of the Nina would sink. ??

?If the vessel got knocked over by a rogue wave it would have happened very, very quickly and they may not have had time to, to launch any life-saving equipment,? Blakemore added.

On her Facebook page, Rosemary Dyche said her family had planned a world tour.

?I am now on an adventure of a lifetime going around the world with my Wonderful husband who is my best friend and our youngest son," she wrote . "But I do Miss my 2 older sons Justin and Kevin and my grand kids Katelynn and Sean my mom. And all my friends. But we have to do it now while we can.??

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Coup leader asks forgiveness from Malian people

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? The officer who led a coup last year that plunged Mali into chaos asked for forgiveness from the Malian people during a ceremony meant to heal the rift between soldiers who supported the putsch and the presidential guard who fought to defend the former president.

Coup leader Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo said that he and his brothers and sisters in green-beret uniform "want to ask for forgiveness from Malians as a whole."

After the coup, the green berets led a purge of the red beret-wearing presidential guard. Many red berets were "disappeared," while others were imprisoned and allegedly tortured.

Interim President Dioncounda Traore said Wednesday the ceremony marked the reconciliation of the two sides and announced that all red beret soldiers still incarcerated had been freed.

'Laverne & Shirley' stars reunite on Nick comedy

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The leading ladies of "Laverne & Shirley" are reuniting.

Nickelodeon said Wednesday that Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams will guest star in an episode of its new sitcom "Sam & Cat."

The actresses starred as 1950s and '60s pals and roommates Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney, workers in a Milwaukee brewery. The sitcom aired from 1976 to 1983 on ABC.

"Sam & Cat" features Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as friends who start a baby-sitting business.

Nickelodeon says Marshall and Williams will start filming on Wednesday. They play characters involved in a decades-old feud, tweaking the long-ago rumors of a "Laverne & Shirley" rivalry.

"Sam & Cat" creator Dan Schneider says it was an honor to write for what he called TV's" funniest female roommates" ever.

Apple Online Store opens in Russia, establishes direct sales in key ...

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 11.15.03 PM

Today, Apple has finally launched a version of its official online store for customers in Russia. The online store is similar in style to Apple?s online stores in other countries. Customers in Russia are now able to order iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs, accessories, and more directly from Apple to their homes. Apple is celebrating the launch by taking up Apple Russia?s homepage to announce the new store (image above)?

This online store is Apple?s first official sales presence in the country. The tech giant is yet to open up an official physical retail store in Russia, but several rumors have pointed to Apple being interested in Russian land. Apple?s ties to Russia have begun firming up over the past couple of years. Late last year, Apple expanded its iTunes Store to Russia, and made this announcement at a major media event in Moscow.?In 2010,?Russian Prime Minister Medvedev visited Steve Jobs at Apple?s Cupertino headquarters.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 11.28.42 PM

As forecasted?by Apple job listings from earlier this year, the Apple Online Store for Russia is fully equipped with a live chat support team and interactive customer communications. The online store includes a panel for live chat in addition to features for chat operators to demonstrate and explain products to potential product buyers.

Russia has been regarded by many as a key emerging market in the technology industry. With Apple making strides to establish itself in emerging markets (such as China), opening direct sales in Russia is a critical move in Tim Cook?s quest to assert Apple as a globally dominant company. Apple is rumored to, later this year, ship a cheaper iPhone, which could assist in this goal.

Rainy Day Staycation at Parque Espa?a Residence Hotel ...

With the kids back to school and the rainy days upon us, it?s hard to squeeze in a getaway. But what if stress is getting the best of you? Then the next best thing would be to go on a ?staycation?.

A staycation is basically having a mini ?vacation? either just within the metro ? usually staying in a hotel/bed and breakfast/resort ? or somewhere that is just a couple of hours drive from where you live.?

However, if you?re so fed up with the metro and want a change of scenery but you?re just not up for more than a 3-hour drive to Tagaytay or Batangas, your next best bet will be to head just a little bit down south to Alabang.

Located in a quieter area of Filinvest City is Parque Espa?a. Unlike most hotels, it is a serviced residence that will be your home away from home.

As soon as you step in, your attention will be caught by the colorful Mediterranean tiles of the front desk and the vibrantly-colored furnishings of Dolce Y Naturales at the lobby lounge that is perfectly balanced by the earth-toned accents. Tr?s chic!

I approached the front desk to inform of my reservation, and after presenting? a valid ID and handing over a Php1,000 incidental deposit (refundable upon check-out), I was given our keycard together with 2 breakfast vouchers and WiFi passwords*.

We were given a 55 square meter 1-Bedroom Deluxe. Needless to say, my mom and I had a lot of space to move around!

Now, don?t worry if the lobby?s theme is not carried through to the rooms yet (but that?s not to say it?s not stylish or cozy). Parque Espa?a?s Sales & Marketing Manager, Tina Robles Anciano, explains that renovation of some rooms are in the works.

Modest dining table complete with dining ware and complimentary bottles of water.

Living room accent and flat screen TV

And because it is a serviced residence, you literally have everything you?ll ever going to need. It has a living area, dining table good for 4 persons, a kitchenette and more.

Our comfy queen-sized bed for the night

We had a bed that was more than big enough for us. The clean, fluffy and comfy sheets and pillows sent us to dreamland in no time.

Aside from the TV in the living room, there is also a wall-mounted flat screen TV and DVD player in the room.

And to maximize space ? as if the room?s not spacious enough ? the closet?s sliding door doubles as a full-length mirror. Inside are built-in clothes? hanger and a safe to keep your valuables.

The working desk with iPod dock/alarm clock and the room?s own WiFi router for faster browsing experience.

The spotless toilet and bath. Plus points for the glass-enclosed shower. No wet floors here.

Each room has its own fully-equipped kitchenette with a fridge, stove, microwave oven, and tea and coffee-making facilities. It even has a flat iron and provision for washing machine.

While I?m sure it?ll be hard to leave the comforts of your room, the roof deck is worth checking out primarily because of the modest pool and the view.

Refreshing view, isn?t it?

This is the beauty of Alabang: you get to enjoy the laid back vibe of the south and be in the metro at the same time.

If you need a quick fix, Westgate and Commerce Center is just a stone throw?s away, but why go out when you can dine at their in-house restaurant? Also located at the roof deck is Bistro del Cielo which serves really, really (did I say really?) good? and affordable food. And I?m not even exaggerating. The food is so delectable it deserves a separate blog post. ;)

For the shopaholics, guests can take advantage of Parque Espa?a?s FREE 24-hour shuttle service to nearby malls like Festival Mall and Alabang Town Center. Talk about value-added service!

Executive Suite

One of the rooms of the 3-bedroom Deluxe. Perfect for groups or families.

The staff was also kind enough to show me the other rooms they have. Though the rooms vary in layout, the amenities are consistent.

For the fitness buff, Parque Espa?a?s location is perfect for a morning run. And don?t worry if it?s gloomy outside, you can still use their fitness center located at the ground floor.?

Humana's CEO on the massive undertaking of health reform

By Caroline Humer

(Reuters) - Bruce Broussard took over as chief executive of Humana Inc in January, just in time to steer the health insurer's entry onto the health insurance exchanges created by President Barack Obama's reform law.

Humana plans to sell subsidized insurance plans in 14 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Kentucky, where it is based, about the same number of states as rivals like WellPoint Inc and Aetna Inc.

The exchanges are expected to bring in 7 million people in 2014. Insurers must offer plans to any individual who applies, regardless of prior health problems. The government will provide subsidies to people who earn up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level, or $94,200 for a family of four.

Humana already has experience with government healthcare programs - it has more than 2.5 million members in privately administered Medicare Advantage plans for the elderly. It also manages Medicare pharmacy benefits for more than 3 million people.

Here is a discussion that Reuters had with Broussard this week on the effort to roll out "Obamacare":

Q: What has proven harder than you thought about the development of the exchanges?

A: This is a massive project. A number of months ago the industry met with the president and he made the comment this is probably the largest healthcare project since the Truman-Kennedy era, and he is right. We are taking on a very, very large project and so there are a lot of details that the states and the federal government are working on. It's keeping up with those and being able to implement them where they are already behind schedule, and trying to keep up so that we do fulfill the needs of the public promise that has been made.

Our challenge right now is it is moving so quickly, keeping up with it and being able to assist the state and federal governments for it to be successful because I think the last thing we want is for it not to be successful. So we are dedicated to helping it. But the details are coming out and they are coming out as quickly as the federal government can get them out.

Q: What did you think about the recent U.S. Government Accountability Office report that said some states are behind?

A: I'm not going to take a different stance than the GAO. I'll just say in general there are a lot of details and everyone is working hard to get this done. The industry is working hard, the states are working hard, the federal government is working hard, but this is a big task that's been taken on and I'm sure details will be get lost in the process just because of the size and the enormous effort that is required here.

Q: When consumers decide on which plan to purchase, would you expect that access to certain doctors and hospitals will play a large role?

A: It's going to be interesting. This is where price and choice are going to come at a crossroads here. I think a more cost-effective product is going to have less choice. It is a test. Most of our products are going to be narrow networks and limited providers because we feel that is the best way we can offer a product that is going to be cost-effective.

Q: How else can consumers judge the value of these products?

A: This isn't much different from (Medicare) Part D and Medicare Advantage when it came out in 2005. There was a lot of confusion around what it meant and there was a lot of time being spent on educating both around choices and options and subsidies to the type of plan.

As we look over the coming number of months, we look at that as a responsibility that we have in educating in the 14 states we will be in. We are going to take our market point sales group that today also handles the Medicare Advantage program, we are going to expand that and they will be an active part of the individual exchange. So we are going to have people on the ground helping people.

We also believe in having relationships where people are in their normal course of life, so retail chains are an important part of that. So not only are we going to have people go to their homes, but in addition we are working with partners with retail outlets so we can staff individuals where it is convenient to a potential member to incorporate in their life.

Q: Do you mean grocery stores and pharmacies?

A: Yes, that's right.
