Super Bowl ad brawl has already begun for automakers

13 hrs.

The hype has begun. Super Bowl XLVII is less than a week away, but the mega-million-buck auto ad brawl is already underway as three of the eight deep-pocket car?advertisers pre-launch their new commercials to NFL fans. The reason? Economics. And a numbers game.

At between $2.4 million?and $4 million per 30-second commercial, ?this amounts to a huge?expenditure for just one airing. But there?s an even bigger number, with more than 115 million Americans predicted to watch?the game Feb. 3.

Until recently, Super Bowl advertising?has been nothing more than putting up the game-day spot and hoping, maybe, that it will trigger some Monday-morning quarterbacking around the water cooler ? with polls and research adding some arguable, additional value. That was then.?

What?s become apparent is that a fairly large percentage of viewers are more interested in the commercials than the game itself. So, how to take advantage of that and extend the payback beyond just a game-day airing that is over in 30 seconds, whether a viewer was sitting in front of the TV or off grabbing something from the refrigerator?

Now, with the various social media,?like Facebook and Twitter as well as YouTube, along with special contests, promotions and PR hype, the shelf life for a good commercial can be dramatically extended to weeks, even months, resulting in additional views extending well into the millions ? even among consumers who ? gasp ? might not have tuned in on Super Bowl Sunday.

Result? The return on investment is as measurable as any ad investment might be. ?And, of course, makers get to battle it out all over for bragging rights as to who was number one.

?(An) early release extends the life of the commercial, builds consumer interest, and most importantly brings early customers into our dealers," said?Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing at Hyundai Motor America.

The?latter reason, arguably, is the most important for buying the commercial in the first place. With that in mind, here are the early commercial entries into this year?s auto ad brawl:?

Mercedes-Benz
During the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Bernie Glaser, vice president of marketing for Mercedes-Benz, said the company has an enviable role in XLVII.?The game will be played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The ad plan was to pre-release a teaser, but in fact two advance spots were released earlier this week. One sexy little tease spotlighted actress Kate Upton and has already received over 3.4 million hits on YouTube ? but also generated a fury of??negative comments from critics for being overly sexy.?The other is a cinematic mystery tease of what is coming Feb. 3, shot in the Big Easy with some great music.

Hyundai
Like every NFL game, it all begins with the coin toss, and in Super?Bowl?XLVII, Hyundai has the primo commercial position ? a 60-second spot for the new seven-passenger?Santa Fe prior to the heads-or-tails call. Check out the not-so-sneak preview.

There are two in game spots, including another for Santa Fe and one for the turbo Sonata. Hyundai also has bought a couple pre-game ads ? featuring the Genesis R-Spec and Santa Fe. Obviously, the new family-size SUV?is getting the most play. The six commercials pre-game and during the game makes Hyundai the biggest car-vertiser in the big show.?

Audi
More than a tease, the rising luxury car marquee is asking consumers to vote for the favorite end of their sixth Super Bowl commercial. Viewers of the commercial on YouTube were?given?24?hours?to?pick their favorite from three possibilities. The most popular will be added in post-production and will air in advance of the game --?and?in?the enviable commercial position of the first break after kick-off.?

Lincoln Motor Company?and Chevrolet
The newest entry in the auto ad brawl in Super Bowl XLVII is the reborn, revitalized, redesigned, re-engineered Lincoln brand from the renamed Lincoln Motor Company. All previous car companies except Chevrolet have re-upped. Chevy is instead?involved in?the half-time show with Beyonce. As TheDetroitBureau.com previously reported, the pop phenom is expected to receive a new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, a special version of the C7 built just for her.?

Valuable Insight To Promote Your Home's Look ~ Home ...

Some people who own homes are afraid of home improvement. It is true that the process can be time-consuming and expensive. Learning a little about the process beforehand can help minimize these fears. A few good tips can make any difficult home improvement job look easy. This article has all the tips you might require.

Talk to home improvement stores and supply companies about how you can obtain discounted supplies. You can save a lot of money by shopping around, and this can give you the opportunity to complete more projects around your home. You should also keep sales in mind when taking on your project so as to lower expenses.

Always turn off the main water supply before working near pipes in your home. Before you start working, locate the shutoff when you working around your house's water supply or pipes. Doing this can help prevent water damage.

Insulate your home for your next project. Use weather stripping around windows and doors. When you minimize the air flow in and out of your home, you can run your environmental and temperature controls with far better efficiency. This means that you will save money on your energy bills.

Update your windows. Revamp those windows! Install double glazed windows. Double glazed windows are not exactly cheap, but they have the benefit of reducing heat loss. Improving your windows can also increase your overall security. If you are unable to purchase new windows, spruce up the ones you have with paint on the frames and a new window treatment.

Selling your house? Home improvement is a very efficient way to make your home more valuable. You can appeal to first-time home buyers by replacing dated kitchen appliances.

Look around for home improvement ideas and inspiration well in advance of beginning a project. If you continuously hunt for home improvement ideas, you will have a wealth of interesting projects in mind once you are ready to start working. This notebook should be compiled a long time before you actually begin your renovations to help reduce your stress.

If you're running out of space when it comes to your kitchen, try using an over-the-range microwave. Over-the-range microwave ovens offer many features, including convection cooking. A lot of units use a filter and not a vent; these are meant for those who do not need a lot of ventilation.

If you are considering major remodeling, engage a professional to design the work or draw up the plans. Unless you or a family member has professional design training, any plans you create are likely to be all form and no function. A professional designer will have the ability to create a plan that also meets all required building codes.

A well-informed homeowner does not need to fear home improvement. Educated ideas like these ones will ensure that the projects are completed on time, within the budget and problem-free. Even a sliver of home improvement knowledge can take the edge off your home improvement fears and enable you to undertake useful projects.

Bright comet ISON could sizzle ? or fizzle

The newly discovered Comet ISON is just a faint speck in the sky right now, but later this year, when it flies closer to the sun, it could shine as bright as the moon and may even be visible in broad daylight, scientists say.

"Comet ISON is a sungrazer," comet-tracker Karl Battams of the U.S. Naval Research Lab said in a NASA statement. "The orbit of the comet will bring it very close to the sun, which we know can be a spectacular thing."

That apparition, if Comet ISON delivers on its promise, is expected to peak in late November. While some astronomers a have touted ISON as a potential "Comet of the Century," there is still some uncertainty on how bright the object will actually become, according to scientists with NASA and other observatories.

    1. Starship Enterprise petition fizzles out

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: If the Death Star went up against the Starship Enterprise, who would win? When it comes to White House petition drives, it's the Death Star.

    2. Mystery of Sun's hot corona may be solved
    3. Astronaut shares secret of zero-G nail clipping
    4. Asteroid ambitions face financial challenges

Officially known as C/2012 S1 (ISON), Comet ISON is currently near the orbit of Jupiter, though astronomers say it is already quite bright for an object so far away. Its exceptional glow suggests that it has a fairly large nucleus in the 0.6- to 6-mile (1- to 10-kilometer) range, estimated astronomer Matthew Knight of the Lowell Observatory, according to NASA. [Photos of Comet ISON in Night Sky]

Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok discovered the comet in September 2012 using a 15.7-inch (0.4-meter) reflecting telescope of the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON), near Kislovodsk. They predicted that at its closest point to the sun, which occurs on Nov. 28, 2013, the comet will come within 800,000 miles (1.2 million km) of the sun's surface and could transform into a dazzling night sky object with a long, dusty tail.

But that's only if the Comet ISON manages to survive its fiery flyby ? it could be destroyed by tidal forces or solar radiation as it approaches the sun, scientists say.

"I'm old enough to remember the last 'Comet of the Century,'" said Don Yeomans of NASA Near-Earth Object Program. Yeomans was referring to a distant comet named Kohoutek that promised to put on such a show in 1973, but turned out to be a bust. "It fizzled. Comets are notoriously unpredictable."

Knight, however, noted that an object smaller than C/2012 S1, Comet Lovejoy, put on a stunning display after it soared through the sun's atmosphere in 2011 and emerged intact on the other side.

"Comet ISON is probably at least twice as big as Comet Lovejoy and will pass a bit farther from the sun's surface" Knight said. "This would seem to favor Comet ISON surviving and ultimately putting on a good show."

Another possibility, astronomers said, is that Comet ISON could break apart, which could give it an appearance akin to a cosmic string of pearls when viewed through a telescope. Yeomans assured that such a scenario would not pose a threat to Earth.

"Comet ISON is not on a collision course," he said. "If it breaks up, the fragments would continue along the same safe trajectory as the original comet."

Editor's note: If you have an amazing picture of Comet ISON or any other night sky view that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, send photos, comments and your name and location to managing editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com.

Stylophone S2 portable analog synthesizer hands-on (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/23/stylophone-s2-portable-analog-synthesizer-hands-on/

The original Stylophone is something of a legend. Made popular by David Bowie (and possibly if you're British, Rolf Harris) in the late sixties / early seventies. Since then the original (shown in our gallery) has been re-released, and spin-off products have come to light. The S2, however, represents a new direction for the vintage synth. This time, makers dubreq wanted to create something that maintained the original's pick-up-and-play appeal, while adding some more high-end features and functionality that open it up to more serious sound-smiths. The first thing you will notice is that, while it still has the iconic metal "keys," the Stylophone S2 is somewhat larger -- no bad thing if you've ever tried penning a melody live on the original. Those keys can be triggered with a wireless stylus, but are touch sensitive also, meaning you can poke out a tune without being limited to the agility of your dominant hand. Skip past the break for more details and a hardware video tour.

If you're thinking that, despite being larger than its predecessor, there's just not enough keys, then be assured you can get a full three octaves plus a +/-2 shift function on the left giving it a comprehensive range. The all-analog sound engine also features an eight waveform LFO, bass-heavy sub-oscillators and a state-variable filter. Thanks to an Aux input, you can also use the filters etc. with external audio sources, plus there are headphone and 1/4-inch outputs. If you're worried it's all a little too compact for a live performance, there's a CV (control voltage) input trigger offering the ability to control with with an external sequencing device. It's not all retro though, with the illuminated speaker section also providing real-time feedback (such as the speed of the LFO). Best -- and most importantly of all -- it sounds just like you want it to, full of crunchy, analog goodness. The hardware feels extremely well built, and definitely feels like it could stand up to the knocks and bangs that inevitably come with taking gear out on the road, which, thanks to the option of AA battery power is wonderfully easy. Sound like something you'd like the sound of? The Stylophone S2 is available now for £299 (about $470 by conversion).

ESPN signs with Ooyala's video embedding service to bake ...

Ooyala Delivers In-Stream Video Viewing on Twitter

Twitter Video Card solution creates new ways to discover, share and monetize video; ESPN first to adopt

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ooyala, the leading video streaming and monetization platform provider, today announced that it has developed a Twitter Video Card solution, in close collaboration with Twitter, that enables Ooyala customers a turnkey solution to embed videos directly into their Twitter streams for instant playback. Previously, users were only able to include a link to a video in Twitter. This solution inserts a thumbnail of the video directly into the stream so followers can click and play directly without leaving Twitter.

"Consumers today are at the intersection of social and mobile, and demanding easy and fast access to video content. Our ability to deliver video directly into the Twitter stream is a major step forward for publishers who want to drive viewer engagement in real-time."

First deployed by sports broadcaster ESPN to better serve its 24 million online video viewers, Ooyala's Twitter Card solution provides media companies, broadcasters and brands a new way to distribute and monetize video content delivered via Twitter across desktops and mobile devices. In addition, the solution can increase the discovery and sharing of video content and optimize engagement through social and mobile by eliminating the barriers to view content directly on Twitter.

"Twitter is a growing source of inbound referral traffic and outbound content distribution for online media publishers and broadcasters," said Jonathan Wilner, senior director, business product management at Ooyala. "Consumers today are at the intersection of social and mobile, and demanding easy and fast access to video content. Our ability to deliver video directly into the Twitter stream is a major step forward for publishers who want to drive viewer engagement in real-time."

As a result of the close collaboration with Twitter, the Ooyala solution has been certified by Twitter, meaning customers can quickly and easily integrate and distribute video content directly into their streams across all platforms -- including desktop, mobile web and native smartphone and tablet apps for both iOS and Android -- and trust that the player will work seamlessly within Twitter. The solution works via an Ooyala Twitter SDK and automatic hosting for Twitter Cards. The turnkey API from Ooyala automatically generates the necessary Twitter tags so that a video can be inserted onto a video landing page to enable Twitter Cards.

Powerful Solution when paired with Discovery

The technology works seamlessly with Ooyala Discovery, which enables video content providers to increase view-related revenue by algorithmically recommending highly relevant content within the Ooyala Player. For example, if a user watches a highlight from a football game within the ESPN Twitter stream, they could receive a recommendation to also watch highlights from the post-game press conference. Personalized content recommendations can further drive user engagement and monetization for each video share in Twitter.

Opening Revenue Streams

In addition to benefiting consumers, this technology opens up new revenue streams for Ooyala customers. It enables the distribution of ad-supported video content across client-owned and consumer Twitter properties, magnified by sharing tendencies of Twitter users. It also opens the door for video integration into Promoted Tweet advertising campaigns across Twitter.

Customers that take advantage of Ooyala analytics will also have extensive data on the performance of their videos through Twitter Video Cards, in addition to the data they already receive on their websites and/or apps, allowing them to further optimize their video content.

About Ooyala

Ooyala delivers personalized video experiences across all screens and is the leader in online video management, publishing, analytics and monetization. Our integrated suite of technologies and services give content owners the power to expand audiences through deep insights that drive increased viewer engagement and revenue from video.

Companies using Ooyala technology include Telstra, ESPN, Pac-12 Enterprises, Miramax, Bloomberg, Telegraph Media Group, Telefonica, The North Face, Rolling Stone, Dell, Sephora and Yahoo! Japan. Israel's Netanyahu seeks strong finish in election

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an election-eve appeal on Monday to wavering supporters to "come home", showing concern over a forecast far-right surge that would keep him in power but weaken him politically.

In the last stretch of a largely lackluster campaign that could produce the most hardline government in Israel's history, Netanyahu has watched high-tech millionaire Naftali Bennett's far-right Jewish Home party chip away at his right-wing Likud's opinion poll lead.

At a final campaign appearance in Jerusalem, Netanyahu voiced confidence his traditional backers would not abandon him, and repeated his stump pledges to keep Israel safe and build Jewish settlements over international opposition.

He has said preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons would remain his priority. During the campaign, parties have avoided discussing the sensitive question of whether and when to use military force against Iran, which denies seeking atomic arms.

"I have no doubt that many, many people will decide at the last minute to come home to Likud-Yisrael Beitenu," said Netanyahu, who polls predict will still win Tuesday's parliamentary election, albeit by a narrower margin than first forecast.

"I have a good feeling. And at the last minute, I appeal to each and every citizen going to the ballot box: 'Decide for whom you are going to vote - for a divided and weak Israel or for a united and strong Israel and a large governing party?'."

The final opinion polls, on Friday, showed Netanyahu's right-wing Likud, running on a joint list of candidates with former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, still set to win.

But the surveys indicated his support had dipped to its lowest point so far and forecast that a potential right-wing and religious bloc of parties led by Likud-Yisrael Beitenu would have a slim parliamentary majority of 63 out of 120 seats.

If the polls are correct - and they have been famously inaccurate in several past elections - Likud and Yisrael Beitenu would capture 10 seats fewer than they took in the previous national ballot in 2009.

A relatively weak showing would make Netanyahu, who has pledged during the campaign to pursue settlement building in the occupied West Bank, more susceptible to the demands of potential coalition partners, including Bennett, and religious parties.

And with peace talks with the Palestinians frozen since 2010 over the settlement issue, there would be little incentive for Netanyahu to pursue any new initiatives as head of a staunchly right-wing government, although he would likely come under pressure to do so if he enlists centrist partners.

Bennett, a charismatic former settler leader, advocates annexing parts of the West Bank, territory Israel captured along with East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights, in the 1967 war, a position to the right of Netanyahu's.

Jewish Home has been the surprise start-up party of the election, forecast to win some 14 seats in a third-place finish.

Second place, according to the polls, will go to the center-left Labour Party led by Shelly Yachimovich, a former journalist who has focused on economic and social issues in the campaign and has ruled out joining a Netanyahu-led government.

Although support for center-left parties has edged higher, their leaders failed to present a united front or persuade many Israelis, alarmed by turmoil in neighbouring Arab states, they are ready to take charge of the country.

SURPRISE SURGE

Bennett's surge has been the talking point of the election, but for voters who have cast ballots for Netanyahu in the past, the Jewish Home leader has a familiar pedigree.

Both are former army commandos and speak American-accented English: Netanyahu went to high school and college in the United States, Bennett's parents immigrated from San Francisco. And each has put settlement expansion at the core of his campaign.

Bennett has made no secret of his desire to join a Netanyahu-led coalition, to the point of plastering the country with campaign ads featuring photos of both leaders.

While Netanyahu still advocates creation of a "demilitarised" Palestinian state, an alliance with Jewish Home would steer his government further to right, potentially putting further strain on his relations with U.S. President Barack Obama and deepening Israel's international isolation.

Netanyahu has campaigned largely on security issues, shrugging off as misplaced international opposition to settlement building that most countries view as illegal and which he sees as a Jewish right based on the Bible and history.

A splintered center-left bloc, whose parties hope to win a majority but may also join a Netanyahu-led government, has had trouble finding a joint message in opposition.

Yachimovich, whose Labour party is forecast to win about 18 seats, has focused on high living costs and economic woes, hoping to translate mass social protests from two years ago into an election victory.

Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister and negotiator with the Palestinians, has promised to work for a regional peace deal. Her Hatnuah party is expected to win fewer than 10 seats.

In the final hours of the campaign, Netanyahu also took new aim at pocketbook issues, after being rocked by figures last week that showed Israel's budget deficit last year was, at 4.2 percent of gross domestic product, double the original estimate.

He announced he would appoint Moshe Kahlon, who as his widely popular communications minister brought down the price of mobile telephone services, to oversee state land allocation - with the aim of lowering housing prices.

Polling stations open at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Tuesday and close at 10 p.m.. Immediately after voting ends, Israeli media release exit polls, with official results due the next morning and party leaders already beginning informal coalition talks.

No one party has ever won a parliamentary majority in Israel, and its president traditionally asks the leader of the biggest bloc to try to form a governing coalition, a process likely to stretch into next month.

Midwest Energy Solutions Conference in Chicago to Cover Smart Grids, New LED Technologies and the Future of Energy Efficiency

Developments such as smart grids, new product standards and building energy codes are changing the landscape for energy efficiency in the Midwest. While energy efficiency programs have exponentially increased in the last four years ? with more than $1.45 billion spent on 2012 efficiency programs in the Midwest alone ? factors such as the incandescent bulb ?phase out? and increased furnace and other equipment standards may threaten future gains. Smart grids, building energy codes, new energy saving products and increased energy use data could drive the market to meeting future goals.

This week?s Midwest Energy Solutions Conference in Chicago will address these emerging trends, taking on critical questions such as:

  • Will smart grid technology promote energy efficiency? (Jan. 16)

SUV plunges into California apartment pool

MERCED, Calif. (AP) ? A California woman is OK after crashing her SUV into an apartment complex swimming pool.

Merced police say 69-year-old Pamela Gwyn was in her Chevy Blazer on a city street Wednesday when for an unknown reason she failed to make a right turn and lost control of the vehicle.

The SUV went through a wrought iron fence outside the apartment complex and continued about 50 feet before landing in the pool.

Sgt. Jay Struble says a good Samaritan, 57-year-old Craig Lafleur of Kingsburg, saw the SUV, pulled it to the edge of the pool by its roof rack and broke its back window. He then helped Gwyn out of the vehicle before it sank.

Struble told the Merced Sun Star (http://bit.ly/W2P830) Gwyn had no recollection of the crash.

Obama to unveil gun violence measures Wednesday

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's broad effort to reduce gun violence will include proposed bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as more than a dozen executive orders aimed at circumventing congressional opposition to stricter gun control.

Obama was to announce the measures Wednesday at a White House event that will bring together law enforcement officials, lawmakers and children who wrote the president about gun violence following last month's shooting of 20 young students and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The broad package Obama will unveil will also include efforts to stop bullying and boost availability of mental health services.

But Congress would have to approve the bans on assault weapons and ammunition magazines holding more than 10 bullets, along with a requirement for universal background checks on gun buyers. Some gun control advocates worry that opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats, as well as the National Rifle Association, will be too great to overcome.

"We're not going to get an outright ban," Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., said of limits on assault weapons. Still, McCarthy, a leading voice in Congress in favor of gun control, said she would keep pushing for a ban and hoped Obama would as well.

White House officials, seeking to avoid setting up the president for failure, have emphasized that no single measure ? even an assault weapons ban ? would solve a scourge of gun violence across the country. But without such a ban or other sweeping, congressionally-approved measures, it's unclear whether executive actions alone could make any noticeable difference.

"It is a simple fact that there are limits to what can be done within existing law," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday. "Congress has to act on the kinds of measures we've already mentioned because the power to do that is reserved by Congress."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed into law the toughest gun control law in the nation, and the first since the Connecticut school shootings. The law includes a tougher assault-weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people who make threats.

According to a lobbyist briefed Tuesday, Obama will present a three-part plan focused on gun violence, education and mental health. He'll call for:

? A focus on universal background checks. Right now some 40 percent of gun sales take place without background checks, including by private sellers at gun shows or over the Internet, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

? A ban on assault weapons and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds or fewer.

? A federal statute to stop "straw man" purchases of guns and crack down on trafficking rings.

? More anti-bullying efforts; more training for teachers, counselors and principals; and funding for schools for more counselors and resource officers.

Obama also will order federal agencies to conduct more research on gun use and crimes, the lobbyist said, something Republican congressional majorities have limited through language in budget bills.

On mental health, Obama will focus on more availability of mental health services, training more school counselors and mental health professionals, and mental health first aid training for first responders, according to the lobbyist, who was not authorized to discuss the plan publicly before the president's announcement and requested anonymity.

The president's framework is based on recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden, who led a wide-ranging task force on gun violence. The vice president's proposals included 19 steps that could be achieved through executive action.

Obama also may order the Justice Department to crack down on people who lie on gun-sale background checks; only a tiny number are now prosecuted. Such a step has support from the National Rifle Association, which has consistently argued that existing laws must be enforced before new ones are considered.

And Obama may give schools flexibility to use grant money to improve safety.

Gun control proponent Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., who met with Biden on Monday, said the president is also likely to take executive action to ensure better state reporting of mental health and other records that go into the federal background check database. But he, too, acknowledged there were clear limits to what Obama can do without Congress' say-so.

"You can't change the law through executive order," Scott said.

White House officials signaled that Obama would seek to rally public support for the measures he puts forward, perhaps holding events around the country or relying on Organizing for America, his still-operational presidential campaign.

During his announcement Wednesday, Obama will be joined children from across the U.S. who wrote letters to him about gun violence and school safety.

One of those children, a Maryland 8-year-old named Grant, wrote: "It's a free country but I recommend there needs (to) be a limit with guns. Please don't let people own machine guns or other powerful guns like that."

It's unclear how much political capital Obama will exert in pressing for congressional action.

The White House and Congress will soon be consumed by three looming fiscal deadlines. And the president has also pledged to tackle comprehensive immigration reform early this year, another effort that will require Republicans' support and one in which Obama may be more likely to get their backing.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has warned the White House that it will be at least three months before the Senate considers gun legislation. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said immigration, not gun control, is at the top of his priority list after the fiscal fights.

House Republican leaders are expected to wait for any action by the Senate before deciding how ? or whether ? to proceed with any gun measure.

Despite GOP opposition, House approves additional $50.7 billion in Hurricane Sandy relief

U.S. President Barack Obama (3rd L) hugs North Point Marina owner Donna Vanzant as he tours damage done by Hurricane Sandy in Brigantine, New Jersey, October 31, 2012. At left is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Putting aside partisan differences, Obam

Obama and Christie meeting with Sandy victims

As expected, the House of Representatives today approved, 241 to 180, an additional $50.7 billion in federal aid for states affected by Hurricane Sandy. Only 49 Republicans voted for the bill; 179 voted against. (The bill itself was for $17 billion in aid; the remaining $33.7 billion in aid was accomplished via amendment and approved by a 228-192 vote, consisting of 190 Democrats and 38 Republican crossovers.)

The aid approved today is in addition to the nearly $10 billion allocated earlier in the month, meaning that the total House package of $60 billion matches the previously approved Senate package.

So that's it. All that Republican drama, all the interest groups demanding Congress not allocate disaster relief, all the other groups demanding it not be done unless the budget is cut an equal amount first, and that one glorious day in which the ever-delaying John Boehner was the target of fuming soliloquies by Republicans such as New York Rep. Peter King and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie?done.

Why that took two and a half months to accomplish, who knows. Apparently House Republicans just had a whole lot of not doing stuff to work out of their system. Note, however, that the result again runs afoul of the Hastert rule, the GOP leadership promise that no bill will be brought to the floor without the support of a majority of Republicans; we'll see if any fallout comes from that.

4:50 PM PT: Tennessee Rep. Jim Cooper was the lone Democrat to vote against the bill.

Britain's Cameron plays down prospect of in-out EU referendum

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday played down the prospect of a near-term referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union, ahead of a long-awaited speech on the issue he is expected to deliver next week.

Cameron says he wants Britain to remain in the EU - a major trading partner - but is under intense pressure from his own party and an increasingly eurosceptic public to repatriate powers from Brussels or leave the 27-member bloc altogether.

"If we had an in-out referendum tomorrow, or very shortly, I don't think that would be the right answer for the simple reason that I think we would be giving people a false choice," he told BBC radio.

"Right now I think there are a lot of people who say 'I would like to be in Europe, but I'm not happy with every aspect of the relationship, so I want it changed'. That is my view," he added.

Cameron says he plans to renegotiate Britain's ties with the EU and seek the public's fresh consent for the new deal, telling the BBC he believes he has allies in his efforts to repatriate more powers from Brussels.

He also made clear that while he did not think Britain would "collapse" if it left the EU, it would be in Britain's interests to remain in the bloc.

However, some diplomats and EU officials feel Britain risks drifting out of the union, and last week close ally the United States made clear that it wanted Britain to remain a "strong voice" inside the EU.

Also last week, the head of the German parliament's influential EU affairs committee and ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Gunther Krichbaum, said re-negotiating Britain's EU ties would open "Pandora's Box" and risked isolating Britain.

5 Simple Projects to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Energy efficient home

When it comes to green energy, there are plenty of little things homeowners can do to help. Both minor adjustments and major investments can help reduce the amount of energy you waste in a given year and thereby lower your heating and cooling bills significantly. Below I?ll outline a few ideas that the average homeowner overlooks far too often. Some of them are simple DIY projects; others call for replacing some equipment. Either way, a reasonable initial investment and some attention to detail can help you minimize your environmental impact and save money at the same time.

?

1. Check the Attic Insulation

The attic is one of the most overlooked areas of any house but it?s definitely worth investing in, especially if it?s unfurnished. Proper insulation will help bottle up the heat in the winter and keep it out in the summer. Fiberglass, cellulose and most foam materials, when installed properly, are all cost-effective materials that can help reduce your energy costs and keep your home comfortable. That means less tinkering with the thermostat, less uncomfortable fluctuations in temperature and less energy needed to sustain a comfortable living space.

?

2. Upgrade Your Windows

It may not be entirely cost-effective to replace every window in your house, but if you?re in the market anyway you might as well check out EnergyStar.gov to shop around for the most effective kinds. Replacing entire windows could save between 7 and 25 percent on your energy bills, but that really depends what kind of windows you have. There are, however, some relatively affordable upgrades you can make instead, like replacing the weatherstripping or installing new storm windows. Always remember to keep your storm windows closed during extreme seasons when you?re running either your heat or AC continuously.

?

3. Plant Some Trees

A lot of people overlook the possibilities landscaping brings to the table. If you were to plant a tree on the west side of your house, the leaves will help provide shade and protect the house from infrared radiation that would otherwise warm up the entire house in the summer. Then, during the winter, after the leaves have all fallen off, the bare branches will let that same light through, which helps warm your house naturally. If you?ve already taken care of the insulation and upgraded your windows, the effect here will be minimal, but every little bit helps; at the very least, you?re planting another tree, which is a great way to go green.

?

4. Replace Your Old Furnace

Any furnace built before 1992 that uses a standing pilot is going to be inefficient, to the tune of about 35 percent wasted energy. If it?s near the end of its lifetime, early replacement is a great idea. Modern condensing furnaces waste no more than 10 percent of the natural gas they use, which equates to roughly 25 percent savings on your heating bill. The difference is even more substantial if your house has a boiler or utilizes a hot water heater or radiators for climate control.

?

5. Adjust your Hot Water Heater and Replace Light Bulbs

This last one is a two-parter because they?re both relatively simple. First, set your hot water heater to around 120 degrees. This should be in the ?warm? range on your unit. This way your hot water doesn?t get too hot. If you want to go the extra mile you could even insulate your hot water lines to retain heat between uses, or you can even install low-flow fixtures in showers and bathtubs. Lastly, replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents. They?re more expensive, but they last much longer than their outdated counterparts, which can save you about 75 percent on energy. The best lights to replace are ones that you use the most, in order to more quickly recover the investment.

Make Online Video Marketing Work For You - demand side forecast

Video marketing is one of the best ways to market your business. When implemented properly, video marketing is a sure fire way to increase sales and profits. For video marketing to work, however, it must be properly implemented in an intelligent manner. This article contains all of the info you need to know in order to succeed at video marketing.

Begin your video by telling your viewers what you are going to teach them or share with them. After that, follow through on your promise and deliver the content. If you state clearly what you are going to do, and then do it, viewers are more likely to watch your videos again.

Make sure that you remember to connect your brand with your video in a way that people will remember. Using a catchy song or phrase is a good way to help people relate the two. The better they can remember your brand the more likely they will be to purchase it.

You should get to know your audience and find out how likely your customers will be to subscribe to a video marketing campaign. Video marketing will work best if your audience is likely to share content on social networks or look for quick updates rather than reading through longer articles.

To succeed at video marketing you must keep your videos short. The Internet is an entirely user controlled, fast paced environment. Potential customers are simply not going to sit through a long 30 second advertisement. To get as many views as possible, make entertaining videos that are short and to the point.

If you are new to video marketing, don't worry too much about the equipment you are using. You do not need a professional television or movie camera to do video marketing. A simple camera will work just fine, as long as it can deliver good quality digital videos. A webcam is never a good idea for video marketing.

Don't forget to include keywords in the filename of your video! Google may index that too, and some sites where you upload your video will include it on the page. Include a few main keywords to ensure your video gets seen by your target audience who may be searching for it.

Do you have any case studies or anecdotal evidence of how well your products work? Why not create a video to share this information with others? You can even include dramatic re-enactments, but be sure to caption them as such. Viewers will love to learn about your products in such a personal manner.

Use other people such as guest speakers on your site and in your videos. As interesting as you might be, your viewers will really appreciate seeing a fresh new face. Make sure that whoever you have in your videos reflects the kind of message you want to send to your viewers.

Videos make your site more interactive but keep in mind that they are not an ideal solution for your search engine optimization campaign. You can optimize your videos by choosing descriptive titles filled with keywords and adding a transcript or a summary of the content of the video you want to feature.

To help people notice your videos you should develop a title that is eye catching and mind bending. Use a play on words or a rhyme to help people remember the name of your video. You should also use your primary keyword and if possible at least one or two associated keywords.

Combine your video marketing efforts with social marketing. After you post your video, announce it in your Facebook account and tweet about it on Twitter. This will drive your followers to view your video where they can give their immediate feedback on the video's effectiveness. This will also encourage them to share the video link with their social network.

Communicate regularly with others in your niche. Not only is this a good way to share advice and ideas, but you can also share marketing. Many bloggers or webmasters often allow the posting of contributions by site visitors. When you can get your message out to a larger customer base within your niche, you will enjoy more success.

As was previously talked about in the opening paragraph, video marketing is an absolutely fantastic way to increase both sales and profits. As a business owner, you are making a mistake if you neglect to utilize this proven to be effective marketing technique. By applying everything you've learned from this article you can make big-time money!

Reduction in air pollution from wood stoves associated with significantly reduced risk of death

Jan. 8, 2013 ? Male deaths from all-causes, but particularly cardiovascular and respiratory disease, could be significantly reduced with a decrease in biomass smoke (smoke produced by domestic cooking and heating and woodland fires), a paper published January 8 on the British Medical Journal website suggests.

The researchers say this could have significant impact on further interventions to reduce pollution from this source.

Although a large amount of research has been carried out on the adverse health effects of air pollution, no studies have reported reductions in deaths associated with interventions to reduce biomass smoke pollution.

In 2001, Launceston (in Tasmania, Australia) was the setting for a series of interventions to reduce wood smoke pollution. The interventions dramatically accelerated a general trend towards using electric rather than wood heaters. As such, wood stove prevalence fell from 66% to 30% of all households and average particulate air pollution during winter was reduced by 40% (44 ?g/m? -- 27 ?g/m?).

Researchers from Australia and Canada used this data to assess whether there were any significant changes in all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality.

This is the first study to assess changes in mortality associated with a reduction in smoke from domestic wood heaters. The researchers compared the population of Launceston with the population of Hobart (also in Tasmania), which did not have any air quality interventions.

The reductions in mortality (deaths per 1000 people at risk per year, adjusted for age) between 1994-2001 and 2001-2007 were not significant for males and females combined (2.7% for all-cause mortality; 4.9% for cardiovascular mortality; 8.5% respiratory mortality). However, reductions were statistically significant for males alone: differences of 11.4% for all-cause mortality; 17.9% for cardiovascular and 22.8% for respiratory.

Results taken during the winter months (June -- August) showed even higher reductions: cardiovascular 20%; respiratory 28%.

The researchers conclude that a trend was found in reduced all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality during the period of improved air quality which was greatest during winter with stronger associations in males. They say that the findings "highlight the potential for important public health gains from interventions to reduce ambient pollution from biomass smoke."

Shape Security Raises $20 Million - Business Insider

Shuman Ghosemajumder / Shape Security

Shuman Ghosemajumder brought buzz to Shape Security when he left Google to join the startup.

The list of investors backing stealthy startup Shape Security?already reads like a Who's Who of Silicon Valley?and that's before the company announced another $20 million round today.

Shape was cofounded by ex-Googler Sumit Agarwal, who was head of Google?s mobile product management until he joined the Obama administration in 2010 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. He founded Shape shortly after he left Washington in 2011.

This round, Shape's second, was lead by Venrock, the venture-capital arm of the Rockefeller family.? Other investors include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; Allegis Capital; Google Ventures; TomorrowVentures, a firm backed by Google chairman Eric Schmidt; and former Symantec CEO Enrique Salem.

The financing brings Shape's total raised to $26 million, including previous investments from Kleiner Perkins and executives at Dropbox, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, the company says.

Shape got tongues wagging in March when Google's Shuman Ghosemajumder joined. He had been working on click-fraud detection.

The company has been somewhat tight-lipped about its technology, but Business Insider recently got Ghosemajumder to spill a few beans about Shape. It's working on a technology that makes it harder for hackers to trick people into visiting malware-laced websites.

"Instead of trying to detect the attack, we provide deflection," Ghosemajumder told us. "We sit between the website and the users."

Stay tuned. We'll be talking to Agarwal later today and hope to hear more about this startup's cool new security tech.

Man's Food Truck Stolen But Thieves Can't Keep Him From Feeding ...

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) ? John Grooman?s Chevy Silverado was stolen from the driveway of his home last Friday.

Normally the theft of a 2006 car wouldn?t make news, but the 65-year-old Grooman used that silver truck every week to help feed? more than 1,000 homeless and needy people.

The truck is his everything.

But, as he tells CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Amanda Burden, his faith makes he believe the vehicle will somehow make its way back to him.

His many admirers call him ?Big John.? And they are referring to his heart.

Most nights he can be found at the soup kitchen he founded ? the Five Loaves and Two Fish Ministry. The name, he explains, ?comes out of the gospel of John.?

Many of the folks here ? the ones who don?t call him ?Big John? ? have no issue with calling him ?Saint John.?

He doesn?t see what he does as any big deal. He?s volunteered and helped people all his life. He says, humbly, ?I guess God just puts it on your heart.?

Irene Garcia, who is currently homeless, sees it differently. ?I think that he has a very big heart.?

Right now he has a void.

The Silverardo was stolen as was his wife?s car. Inside was $3,700 worth of cooking equipment he uses for his ministry. ?We?re a traveling soup kitchen and so when they got my truck they got all my cooking supplies, my tables, my serving trays.?

Grooman figures he is down, but not out. He tells Burden he isn?t even concerned. ?My first thought was ? ?I wonder what God has in store for me next???

Already the community has rallied to his side. One friend offered him the use of his truck. Other friends and supporters offered all the grills and tables and trays he needs to keep the traveling soup kitchen alive.

Says Grooman, ?That?s where God reaches out. He makes it available and then you use it and you start replacing your stuff. We didn?t miss one beat.?
