Man's Food Truck Stolen But Thieves Can't Keep Him From Feeding ...

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) ? John Grooman?s Chevy Silverado was stolen from the driveway of his home last Friday.

Normally the theft of a 2006 car wouldn?t make news, but the 65-year-old Grooman used that silver truck every week to help feed? more than 1,000 homeless and needy people.

The truck is his everything.

But, as he tells CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Amanda Burden, his faith makes he believe the vehicle will somehow make its way back to him.

His many admirers call him ?Big John.? And they are referring to his heart.

Most nights he can be found at the soup kitchen he founded ? the Five Loaves and Two Fish Ministry. The name, he explains, ?comes out of the gospel of John.?

Many of the folks here ? the ones who don?t call him ?Big John? ? have no issue with calling him ?Saint John.?

He doesn?t see what he does as any big deal. He?s volunteered and helped people all his life. He says, humbly, ?I guess God just puts it on your heart.?

Irene Garcia, who is currently homeless, sees it differently. ?I think that he has a very big heart.?

Right now he has a void.

The Silverardo was stolen as was his wife?s car. Inside was $3,700 worth of cooking equipment he uses for his ministry. ?We?re a traveling soup kitchen and so when they got my truck they got all my cooking supplies, my tables, my serving trays.?

Grooman figures he is down, but not out. He tells Burden he isn?t even concerned. ?My first thought was ? ?I wonder what God has in store for me next???

Already the community has rallied to his side. One friend offered him the use of his truck. Other friends and supporters offered all the grills and tables and trays he needs to keep the traveling soup kitchen alive.

Says Grooman, ?That?s where God reaches out. He makes it available and then you use it and you start replacing your stuff. We didn?t miss one beat.?

Political action the biggest swing factor in meeting climate targets

Thursday, January 3, 2013

The new study, published today in the journal Nature, examined the probability of keeping average global temperatures from rising more than 2?C above preindustrial levels under varying levels of climate policy stringency, and thus mitigation costs. In addition, the study for the first time quantified and ranked the uncertainties associated with efforts to mitigate climate change, including questions about the climate itself, uncertainties related to future technologies and energy demand, and political uncertainties as to when action will be taken.

The climate system itself is full of uncertainty ? an oft-used argument to postpone climate action until we have learned more. "We wanted to frame the problem in a new way and try to understand which uncertainties matter in trying to limit global warming by specific climate action," says Joeri Rogelj, ETH researcher and lead author on the paper, who carried out the research at IIASA.

The most important uncertainty, according to the study, is political ? that is, the question of when countries will begin to take serious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement other policies that could help mitigate climate change. Keywan Riahi, IIASA energy program leader and study co-author says, "With a twenty-year delay, you can throw as much money as you have at the problem, and the best outcome you can get is a fifty-fifty chance of keeping temperature rise below two degrees." Two degrees is the level that is currently supported by over 190 countries as a limit to avoid dangerous climate change.

Social uncertainties, which influence consumer energy demand, were second-most important, the study found. Social uncertainties refer to things like people's awareness and choices with respect to energy and to the adoption of efficient technologies.

"How much energy the world consumes going forward turns out to be a much bigger swing factor for climate change than the availability of technologies like solar and wind power, biofuels, and so on," said IIASA researcher David McCollum, another co-author. "Energy efficiency, improved urban planning, lifestyle changes ? these things on the demand side of the energy equation are so important; yet they receive relatively little attention compared to the supply side."

The researchers examined geophysical and technological uncertainties and found that while the climate system and energy supply technologies are generally seen as the major factors for climate, they ranked below political and social uncertainties in the new study. Geophysical uncertainties refer to the unknown ? and unknowable ? factors about how the climate system will react to greenhouse gas emissions. Technological uncertainties refer to questions about which energy supply and carbon capture systems will be available in the future.

The authors used scenarios to define how these factors affect the probability of staying within a given temperature target, at a variety of carbon prices. In addition to the 2?C target, the researchers also explored the distribution of costs and risks for limiting global warming to below 1.5?C and 3?C. Even for a 3?C target, a 20-year delay in the most stringent greenhouse gas reductions in combination with a high demand future means that there would remain a one in three chance that temperatures exceed 3?C. At the same time, limiting warming to 1.5?C with at least a fifty-fifty chance (a target supported by the least-developed countries and small island states) appears only to be possible if the world starts acting on climate change now and turns towards an energy-efficient future.

Surprisingly, while much research is focused on understanding the global climate, a highly complex system with many uncertainties, the new study finds that after a certain point, there is little chance of limiting temperature rise to below 2?C. "Ultimately, the geophysical laws of the Earth system and its uncertainties dictate what global temperature rise to expect," said Rogelj. "If we delay for twenty years, the likelihood of limiting temperature rise to two degrees becomes so small that the geophysical uncertainties don't play a role anymore."

Soap maker's secret for innovation - Business Management Daily

To get a mature business innovating again, treat customers (not yourself) as the boss, says former Procter & Gamble chief A.G. Lafley.

After taking over in 2000 as chief executive, Lafley pursued innovation as a customer-driven process of product development that was consistent, replicable and predictable. His two biggest hits before stepping down in 2010 were Swiffer and Febreze, category changers that made surface cleaning and odor removal easier.

Result: Between 2000 and 2007, Lafley tripled profits.

Here?s his formula?he calls it ?four C?s and an O??for creating an innovative culture:

Openness. Lafley considers this the most important. If your mind is closed, you can?t even start talking with customers. Openness is the beginning of the innovation process.

Connectedness. Next, maintain contact between employees and customers throughout a structured process. Reassure employees by keeping your core culture and products the same, but change everything else.

Collaboration. Once you?ve connected everybody, the collaborative process begins. Lafley calls it an ?all for one, one for all? proposition.

Curiosity. P&G has found a high correlation between employees who are curious about a lot of things and those who innovate freely.

Courage. Uncertainty is the name of the game, especially in the soap business, Lafley says, where up to 85% of new products fail. You?ve simply got to have a stomach for risk. His answer: Fail quickly and cheaply so you can move on.

Samsung teases Series 7 Chronos refresh with AMD Radeon 8870M graphics (video)

Samsung added a 17-inch model to its Series 7 Chronos laptop range last year, and updated the whole family with Ivy Bridge processors, to boot. Barely a breath into 2013, the company is at it again, teasing better hardware in the "new" Series 7. There isn't much information in between the scenes of advanced robotic predators (video embed below), but those snippets mention RAMaccelerator (which promises 50 percent faster app loading), a full HD display, JBL speakers and most importantly, a beefy new AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU. Since the 17-inch model already has a 1,920 x 1,080 panel and JBL speakers, these could be improvements coming to the 15-inch model, or maybe it's a hint that RAMaccelerator and upgraded graphics are destined for the larger sibling -- we just don't know. As we're merely days away from CES, it's likely we'll get a clearer picture of what's what at the show, but we've also contacted Sammy for clarification in case beans are willing to be spilled beforehand.

CSN: Texans trying to rediscover their defense

When J.J. Watt and the rest of his defensive mates showed up to Reliant Stadium on Monday morning, things were a whole lot simpler.

For the month previous, they worried about winning the division, playoff scenarios, whether or not they were going to be playing a game on Wild Card Weekend. Turns out, they are. And instead of treating that as the terrible fate it appears to be from the outside, the Texans are using it as motivation to get back to what made them a great defense in the first place.

?We?re at an all-time high. We?re ready to roll,? Watt said. ?This is the NFL playoffs. Twelve teams, one goal. That?s it. You lose, you go home. You win, you go on. At the end of this one month and one week there?s going to be one team standing with a trophy in their hands. And we want that to be us.?

Win or go home.

If that?s not enough to push a team back into doing what made it great, then nothing is.

So when the defense arrived at the stadium on Monday, Watt and a few other defense leaders, whom Watt refused to name, talked about it. They talked about forgetting the past month, when the Texans lost three of four and the top seed in the AFC. They talked about getting back to playing the kind of defensive football that shot Houston out to an 11-1 start to the 2012 season.

?It?s something that when we came in on Monday, we said ?we?re flipping the mentality,?? Watt said on Tuesday, four days before the Bengals come to town. ?Nobody?s going to come in here ? nobody?s going to be down about the loss. Nobody?s going to worry about what happened in the last month. It?s playoff time and all we?re going to worry about is this game, having fun, playing like the Texans and doing what we do best.?

After starting off the season as one of the most feared defenses in the league, the Texans are now the seventh ranked defense in the NFL, giving up 323.3 yards per game. The Texans? defense has given up more than that in five of its last seven games.

?We maybe lost a little bit of our confidence,? outside linebacker Connor Barwin said. ?(There was) a lack of focus the last month of the season. I think it was just what everybody?s knows. Just get back to who we are, be who we are, have fun and stop over-thinking, worrying about scenarios or what?s going to happen and just get back to having fun like we did the first three quarters of the season.?

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the decline of the once mighty Houston Texans? defense is that it hasn?t happened across the board. At times, this defense looks like the one that catapulted the team to the hottest start in football and at other times ? well, it doesn?t.

The Texans have given up six pass plays of 60-plus yards this season, tying them with the Redskins for the most in the NFL. All six of those plays have, not surprisingly, come after Week 10.

But the problem with the Texans isn?t just a decline in play. Sure it didn?t help to lose Brian Cushing and it certainly won?t help that they?ve now lost another linebacker in Darryl Sharpton. But the Texans? defense is plenty talented. Perhaps what they were missing most was their bravado. That?s what the defensive leaders tried to stress. And so far, they say it?s working.

?It?s the playoffs so everything is stepped up,? Barwin said. ?You can tell everyone is a little more locked in. You can tell the theme is getting your groove back and being who we are.?

Watt said the entire team, especially the defense, had a great day of practice on Tuesday. Players were flying around, making plays. They looked like the Bulls on Parade again.

?We lost three out of four but we came out this week with a goal in mind to change our outlook,? Watt said. ?On defense, we want to get back to Bulls on Parade. Get back to swarming on defense, making plays, just having fun. We want to have fun and out at practice today, you could tell there was a little bit of fun out there.?

Now?s as good a time as any.

Kanye West, Kim Kardashian expecting 1st child

(AP) ? The Kardashian clan is getting bigger: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their first child.

The rapper announced at a concert Sunday night that his girlfriend is pregnant. He told the crowd of more than 5,000 at the Ovation Hall at the Revel Resort in song form: "Now you having my baby."

The crowd roared.

Kourtney Kardahsian and Kris Jenner also tweeted about baby news.

West also told concertgoers to congratulate his "baby mom" and that this was the "most amazing thing."

Representatives for West and Kardashian didn't immediately respond to emails about the pregnancy.

The rapper and reality TV star went public in March. Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries in August 2011 and their divorce is not finalized.
